that first teasingly warm day
followed by a wallop of snow
the one that comes quickly
but also leaves quickly
because it knows we’re done

with winter and we long for
the first real warm day
and then the first real warm day arrives
all those things have come
and some others
the first night with the windows open
because the cool spring evening air
is just warm enough
the first thunderstorm
the air electric and exciting
and I feel like dancing in my bedroom
until the thunder and lights die down
but the rain stays steady
calming the children and dogs
and me so now I feel like lying awake all night
listening to the rain
on the roof on the trees on the grass
all night
